A MESSIANIC PASSOVER SEDER FOR CHILDREN

HAGGADAH

INTRODUCTION

Leader's Check List

Read through the Haggadah book in advance.
Select what songs are to be sung, if any. Set out an Order of Service for each participant
Have prizes for the finders of the AFIKOMEN.
Set up the three in one Matzos cover (Matzos Tosh). Place three Matzos in a special matzo cover. Have AFIKOMEN cover ready before hiding.
Have Table set in advance; hold perishables to set out last.
Matzos on a plate should have a white napkin on the bottom and top (or use Matzos Tosh) as a cover.
A small pillow for the leader to learn on if space allows.
Two white candles and matches, [maybe for each table]
Cup of Elijah is placed not filled.
Pitcher of water, Bowl and Towel for washing of hands.
Set up Seder Plate with Roasted Lamb Bone, Bitter Herbs, Green Vegetable (parsley), Hard boiled Egg, and the Clay of apples and nuts.

Today is a special day. We are going to have a special dinner to learn about two important stories in the Bible: The Story of Passover the story of Jesus’ Last Supper

Tonight we will also call Jesus by his Hebrew name, Yeshua, which means “Jehovah Saves.”

The order of service

The word Seder means "Order". This meal will be celebrated as it has since the first Passover.

The order of service we will follow tonight is from the HAGGADAH which means "the Telling.”

Searching for Leaven

Leaven is a symbol of sin, and the putting away of Leaven is a picture of sanctification. The Hebrew word for Leaven, Chametz, means bitter or sour.

We got rid of all the Chametz in the house but there are a few pieces hiding. Let’s find them and throw them out.

Blessed art thou, o lord our god, king of the universe, who made us holy with his commandments, and commanded us to remove the leaven.

(The children then search for leaven. The bread found is thrown in the fireplace, and when the search is concluded, the following is said)

Any leaven that may still be in the house, which I have or have not seen, which I have or have not removed, shall be as if it does not exist, and as the dust of the earth.

Our meal tonight also has no chametz.

LIGHTING OF THE CANDLES

Now we begin the Season with the lighting of the Festival Lights.

Lighting candles reminds us that God is our light (Woman lights the candles and recites the following)

Baruch ata Adonai, El-o-hay-nu mel-ech ha-o-lam, She-sha-lach et bin-'e-cha y-'e-chid-'e-cha, Y'shua Ha-Ma-shi-ach, lih-'e-yot or ha-o-lam, v-'e-seh hap-pes-ach, she-lan-u l-'e-ma-an nich-'e-yeh biz-'e-chuto. Amen

Blessed art Thou, O Lord our God, King of the Universe, who has sent Your Son, Your Only Son, Yeshua the Messiah, to be the light of the world and our Pascsover Lamb, that through him we might live. Amen.

KIDDUSH - First Cup

Let the Seder Begin

Please fill the first cup.

(Hold up cup)

During the Passover Seder, we will drink four glasses of juice. and will say the traditional Jewish prayer before drinking each cup

THIS FIRST CUP IS THE CUP OF SANCTIFICATION AND BLESSING. IN HEBREW: KIDDUSH.

With this cup we set this night aside as different than all other nights.

Blessed art Thou, o Lord our god, King of the universe, creator of the fruit of the vine

Blessed art Thou, o Lord our God, King of the universe, who chose us from all peoples and exalted us among all nations, By making us holy with His commandments.

Blessed art thou, o Lord our God, King of the universe, who Has given us life and brought us to this happy season. (Lean to the left and drink the Cup.)

At Jesus’ Last Passover he also drank the cup of sanctification with his disciples.(Luke22:14-18)

UR'CHATZ - THE WASHING OF HANDS:

Now for the Washing of Hands: (Exodus 40:29-32)

Ba-rukh A-tah A-do-nai E-lo-hey-nu Me-lekh ha-'o-lam a-sher kid-sha-nu B'-mitz-vo-tav v'-tzi-va-nu ahl na-tie-lat ya-da-yim.

ALL: Blessed are you, O Lord our God, King of the Universe, who has sanctified us by your commandments, and has commanded us to wash our hands.

(Dip hands into water and then dry.)

At the time during the washing of hands, that Yeshua washed the disciples’ feet.

KARPAS - EATING OF the GREEN VEGETABLE

After we say the prayer, take the parsley and dip it into the salt water. It is to remember the tears the Israelites cried in Egypt.

THE SYMBOLS OF PASSOVER

(matzah, salt water are not on plate)

In the center of the Seder is the special Seder Plate. Each food on it means something special

(hold up items).

The MATZAH, The Unleavened bread to remember the bread made by the Israelites (Exodus 29:7 & Deuteronomy 16:3)
The ROASTED LAMB BONE is to remember the Temple Sacrifice and the first Passover Lamb. (Revelation 5:12
BITTER HERBS to remember the bitterness of slavery.
A GREEN VEGETABLE to remember the branches used to apply the blood of the lamb to the doorpost. (Hebrews 12:15 James 3:14)
The CLAY of apples, nuts, cinnamon, and wine to remember the bricks and mortar that Pharoh forced the Israelites to make. (Exodus 1:14)
A ROASTED EGG to remember the Temple Holiday Sacrifice (Deuteronomy 16:16
SALT WATER to remember the the blood of the first Passover lamb and the tears of the Israelite slaves. (Exodus 14:22)

YACHATZ - BREAKING THE MIDDLE MATZAH

(Show 3 matzos wrapped in white covering)

Three Matzos are placed in a special white covering called the "matzo toff". The middle matzah is taken out and broken. The larger piece is wrapped and hidden. It is called the Afikoman which means “that which comes later.” The Afikoman is hidden, and will be found later for a reward. The smaller piece is eaten before the meal.

Why are there three matzos?

It is to show us the one and only God revealed in three persons: the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Yeshua (Jesus) was broken, buried, and brought back. He who finds Him receives a great reward: Eternal Life.

(Uncover the matzah and lift up the plate for all to see. Then recite the following:)

This is the bread of affliction which our forefathers ate in the land of Egypt. All who are hungry--let them come and eat. All who are needy--let them come and celebrate the Passover with us. Now we are here; next year may we be in the Land of Israel (break matzah)
(The plate is put down, the matzah is covered,)

Please pour juice for the SECOND CUP coming later.

Now we will HIDE the AFIKOMAN. Children please close your eyes..... (Honored woman hides the Afikoman (larger piece) and returns other to cover.)

THE FOUR QUESTIONS

Woman: Shema Yisreal Adonai eloheinu Adonai ehcad

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. (Deuteronomy 6:4-9)

READER: And it shall be, when your children say to you, “What do you mean by this service?” that you shall say, “It is the Passover sacrifice of the Lord, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt when He struck the Egyptians and delivered our households.'" (Exodus 12:26-27)

(Leader starts here) Now it is time for the Four Questions to be read.

The youngest present asks the Four Questions. [Name] please ask the 4 questions.

(Child or youngest present asks. Hebrew does not need to be said unless desired by child:)

She-be-khol ha-ley-lot a-nu okh-lin kha-meytz u-ma-tzah. Ha-lai-lah ha-zeh ku-lo ma-tzah.
She-be-khol ha-ley-lot a-nu okh-lin she'ar yerakot. Ha-lai-lah ha-zeh a-ror.
She-be-khol ha-ley-lot eyn a-nu mat-bi-lin a-fi-lu pa-'am e-khet. Ha-lai-lah ha-zeh shtey f'a-min.
She-be-khol ha-ley-lot a-nu okh-lin beyn yo-she-vin u-veyn me-su-bin. Ha-lai-lah ha-zeh ku-la-nu me-su-bin. ]

Why is this night different from all other nights?

On all other nights we may eat either leavened or unleavened bread; but on this night why only unleavened bread?
On all other nights we eat herbs of any kind; but on this night why only bitter herbs?
On all other nights we do not dip our herbs even once; but on this night why do we dip them twice?
On all other nights we eat our meals sitting or reclining; but on this night why do we eat in a reclining position?

(Leader: Uncover the matzah and begin the reply.)

Tonight is different from all other nights because tonight we will remember what God has done for his people.

The Haggadah tells in detail the whole story. But first I will briefly answer your questions:

We eat matzah because when our ancestors left Egypt, they had no time to bake bread with leaven.
We eat bitter herbs to remind us of the bitterness our ancestors experienced when they were oppressed by the Egyptian taskmasters.
We dip food twice: the parsley in salt water, as we have already explained, and the matzah into bitter herbs, as we shall later explain.
We lean to the left when we partake of the cup to symbolize our freedom. Slaves ate hurriedly, standing, but royalty and the wealthy dined on couches. Israel reclined while eating to show that they were now free. Since we do not have couches for each person, the leader has a pillow to lean on and everyone leans to the left when drinking the cup and eating the matzah.

ALL: Blessed Is God Who gave the Torah to His people, Israel. Blessed is He.

MAGGID - TELLING THE PASSOVER STORY

Use Age Appropriate Children’s Bible; or do play, puppet show, etc.

LEADER (after story): Tonight, we worship God not only because of the first Passover but because by faith in the Messiah, Yeshua, we may pass over from death to life.

THE SECOND CUP - PLAGUES & iniquity

Please lift up the second cup, the cup of the TEN PLAGUES.

So this promise made to our forefathers holds true also to us! For more than once has the enemy risen up to destroy us. But the Holy One, blessed be He, The Lord and God, He Saves us!

But Put down the cup!

Our JOY is not full because the Egyptians suffered. A full cup means joy. And even though we are joyful we will show our sadness for the suffering by taking drops out.

We will all say the Plagues together. As we do, we will take one drop out of our cup for each of THE TEN PLAGUES. With your little finger, dip into your cup to remove a drop, one for each of the Plagues placing it onto your plate. Say them together with me:

ALL:

Blood!
Frogs!
Gnats!
Wild Beasts!
Disease to Livestock!
Boils!
Hail!
Locusts!
Darkness!
Death of the Firstborn

DAYEINU (Enough)

How thankful must we be to God, the All Knowing, All loving, for all the good He has done for us. For each blessing we give thanks!

If God had only delivered us from Egypt, It would have been enough for us. That is it would have been sufficient.

The Hebrew word for "It would have been enough" is DAYEINU. (pronounced: Day e inu) Please say DAYEINU with me after each statement.

Had He given us eternal salvation through Yeshua and not given His Holy Spirit. It would have been enough for us. ALL: DAYEINU

Had He given us His Holy Spirit and not bestowed us with the fruit of the Spirit. It would have been enough for us. ALL: DAYEINU.

Had He bestowed us with the fruit of the Spirit and not given us His peace. It would have been enough for us. ALL: DAYEINU.

Let us sing for joy to Our Lord!

The THREE SYMBOLS

The Passover offering which our fathers ate in Temple days, what was the reason for it? It was because the Holy One, blessed be He, passed over the houses of our forefathers in Egypt (Exodus 12:27)

(Hold up middle broken Matzah)

This matzah which we eat, what is the reason for it? It is because there was not time for the dough of our ancestors in Egypt to leaven, before the Ruler of all, the Holy One, blessed be He, revealed Himself to them and redeemed them, (Exodus 12:39)

(Hold up the bitter herbs)

These bitter herbs which we eat--what is their meaning? They are eaten to recall that the Egyptians embittered the lives of our forefathers in Egypt, (Exodus 1:14)

It was not just our forefathers whom the Holy One, blessed be He, redeemed; He redeemed us too, with them,

(Raise the cup and say:)

So we should thank God in songs and prayer. He brought us out from slavery to freedom, from sadness to joy, and from darkness to great light.

(Set Cup down, again)

THE SECOND CUP - PLAGUES

(Raise the cup and say:)

Blessed art Thou, O Lord Our God, King of the universe, Creator of the fruit of the Vine

(Drink the second cup, leaning to the left.)

MOTZI - MATZAH, MOROR & BITTER HERBS

MOTZI - MATZAH

Let us bless the Matzah. This is the bread blessing Yeshua pronounced at the Last Supper.

(Pass out the middle and top Matzah if needed. [For large groups the Matzah at the table may be used.])

(Leader holding the top and middle-half pieces of matzah. Say the two blessings over the matzah:)

Ba-rukh A-tah Adonai E-lo-hey-nu Me-lekh ha-'o-lam ha-mo-tzi le-khem min ha-'a-retz.

Ba-rukh A-tah A-do-nai El-o-hey-nu Me-lekh ha-'o-lam a-sher kid-sha-nu B'-mitz-vo-tav v'-tzi-va-nu a-he-lot ma-tza.

ALL: Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of the Universe, who brings forth bread from the earth.

ALL: Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of the Universe, Who has sanctified us with His commandments, and has commanded us concerning the eating of the matzah.

MOROR - BITTER HERBS

Ba-rukh A-tah A-do-nai El-o-hey-nu Me-lekh ha-'o-lam a-sher kid-sha-nu B'-mitz-vo-tav v'-tzi-va-nu a-he-lot Ma-ror.

ALL: Blessed are you, O Lord our God, King of the Universe, Who has sanctified us with His commandments, and has commanded us concerning the eating of the Maror.

Eat the top MATZAH with bitter herbs.

KORECH -- MATZAH, BITTER HERBS SANDWICH

To remember the holy Temple, we eat a sandwich with matzah and bitter herbs.

Make a sandwich of matzah, bitter herbs and mortar, the apple mix.

Let’s eat the sandwich.

This sandwich, also known as the sop was the dipped sop that Yeshua gave to Judas to show the others who would betray him. (John 13:21-28)

Let us give Thanks. (Personal prayer of thanks out LOUD)

SHULCHAN ORECH - THE FESTIVAL MEAL

EGG DIPPED

We start the meal by Eating an egg dipped in salt water to remember the temple sacrifice in the temple days, the temple destruction, and the need to rebuild Zion today.

(Dip egg and eat it)

MEAL

Now you may eat.

Background music during dinner: Messianic praise, Passover songs. Marty Goetz, Prince of Egypt, etc.

BAREICH - GRACE AFTER THE MEAL

Let us continue the Seder. (Give time for people to be seated)

It is Jewish custom to give thanks after the meal. Repeat what I say:

READER: Let us give thanks to the Lord.

ALL: Let us give thanks to the Lord.

READER: We praise You, O God.

ALL: We praise You, O God.

(Leader) Please fill your cup for the cup of Redemption.

TZAFON - EATING THE AFIKOMEN

The meal cannot be completed without eating the AFIKOMAN. So now it must be found and brought back. The one who finds it gets a reward.

The children may now get up and find the Afikoman. No one can leave till it is found...

(Hot-cold hints. Once found and returned, continue...)

Thank you. (Rewards given to ALL children)

We eat the Afikoman in place of the Passover Lamb. Yeshua took this portion of the Seder to start the Lord's Supper: Communion

Jesus is the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world. (John 1:29)

This is the Bread of affliction, the humble Bread.

The Bread reminds us of Him. It must have stripes, be pierced, and without leaven. Yeshua was afflicted, striped, pierced, and without sin.

(ISAIAH 53)

The Afikoman has been buried and raised. A reward is given for the finder of the Afikoman.

It was during the blessing after the meal and the eating of the Afikoman that Yeshua said:

"Take, eat; this is My body which is *broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me." (1 Corinthians 11:23-24)

The Passover can not be completed without the afikoman, nor can our redemption be complete without Yeshua, the Bread of Life, our Messiah!

(Each person is given a portion. pass to left & right)

Ba-rukh A-tah A-do-nai El-o-hey-nu Me-lekh ha-'o-lam ha-mo-tzi le-khem min ha-'a-retz

ALL: Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of the Universe, who brings forth bread from the earth.

(Pause for a moment of silent prayer...)

Let us eat the bread. His death on the cross fulfilled the symbolism of the Passover lamb.

THE THIRD CUP - REDEMPTION

The Cup of Redemption: The Cup of Blessing: We remember Israel’s deliverance from slavery, and also from of death by the blood of the first Passover Lamb.

It was with this cup The Word of God tells us:

He (Yeshua, the Lord Jesus) also took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you. (Luke 22:20)

"This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me." (1 Corinthians 11:25b)

I will lift up the cup of salvation, The Cup of Yeshua, and call on the name of the Lord, remembering that Jesus' blood was poured out for the forgiveness of sins. Let us be thankful.

(pause for moment of prayer)

Ba-rukh A-tah A-do-nai E-lo-hey-nu Me-lekh ha-'o-lam bo-rey pri ha-ga-fen.

ALL: Blessed are you, O Lord our God, King of the Universe, who created the fruit of the vine.

Let us drink the cup.

(We drink the third cup)

(1 Corinthians 11:26)

The Israelites trusted God and put the blood of the Lamb to their doors, so that they would live; And God must see the blood of the Lamb, Yeshua our Savior at the door of our heart so that we may have eternal life.

ELIJAH THE PROPHET

I will now fill the special cup, The cup of Elijah,( hold it up.)

Could a child please open the door? Everyone please rise. We open the door, indicating our readiness to receive the Prophet Elijah, herald of the Messiah. We must also now open our hearts to the truth

(Malachi 4:4-6a)

(Leader starts reading) The cup of Elijah is filled, but not drunk. It is to remind us of the messiah. (Luke 1:17) (Matthew 11:14)

John the Baptist came in the power of Elijah. However Elijah himself will come to announce the second coming of our Messiah.

So please close the door and be seated.

THE FOURTH CUP of PRAISE and Completion

Let us fill the fourth cup, the Cup of Praise, and give thanks to God!

(Raise the cup and recite:)

Ba-rukh A-tah A-do-nai E-lo-he-ynu Me-lekh ha-'o-lam bo-rey pri ha-ga-fen.

ALL: Blessed are you, O Lord our God, King of the Universe, who created the fruit of the vine.

In Closing we call out to our Lord and God,

Ended is the Passover Seder according to custom, statute and law.

As we were worthy to celebrate it this year, so may we perform it in future years.

Speedily lead Your redeemed people to Zion in Joy.

The Seder ends by every one saying:

And I Thought Parodies Were Protected by Law!

It's been a while since I've done a article about parenting issues, and I really wanted to get some family updates on here. But that will have to wait another day. Today I want to bring to light how ridiculously litigious our society is, and to support a great cause at the same time:

Pig-Headed Company Sues Breastfeeding Blogger

The National Pork Board is threatening to sue breastfeeding blogger The Lactivist because she has a CafePress store that sells t-shirts with funny pro-breastfeeding slogans. The Lactivist is a blog for breastfeeding moms that promotes human milk banking. The shirts help fund the site and to raise money for the non-profit milk banks.

But yesterday the blogger received a letter from an attorney representing The National Pork Board that stated that the use of the phrase "the other white milk" violates their trademark on the phrase "the other white meat." They've demanded that the shirt be removed and that the slogan not be used in a profitable way.

I find this simply ridiculous and just an example of bullying. Parody shirts are quite common and no one on earth is going to see that shirt on a breastfeeding mother and think they are somehow encouraging people to not eat pork. It is simply a clever way of raising awareness. Cow milk is white, so is breastmilk. It is humor with a message. Plain and simple.

But I guess the Pork Board's complaint is that somehow the parodied slogan tarnishes thier image. Somehow the association with breastfeeding makes it less than wholesome. (And that is another battle altogether.) Honestly, I would think the Pork Board would be glad for the extra publicity. A shirt with that slogan might remind people of the copywrited one, and they, in turn, might just decide on ham instead of steak for dinner.

But not this blogger. If I didn't have enough reasons to not eat pork already, I just found one more.

HAPPY HANUKKAH

Tonight is the first night of Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights. And this is the second year that my family has activly observed the holiday.

That, of course, causes confusion and questions from friends and family who know that I am a Gentile, and a Christian.

I would like to briefly clear that up and assure any who are bewildered that our family has not converted to Judaism. In fact we have not even changed where we go to church.

Why would a Christian celebrate the "Jewish" holidays?

The heritage of the Christian faith is the same as the Jews. The Bible is a Hebrew book and Jesus himself was born a Hebrew. The disciples were Jewish the and early church was predominately Jewish. We as gentiles have been grafted into this family. It is fitting that we understand and appreciate our roots.

Each of the biblical Jewish holidays teaches us about our relationship with God and his plan of redemption. As we celebrate, we see the pictures of this story through the traditions and observances.

Even Hanukkah and Purim, which are not commanded in the Torah, help us learn more about our Lord.

Why Hanukkah?

Jesus celebrated Hanukkah (Feast of Dedication of the Holy Temple) and used it to explain how He was sanctified and sent into the world.(John 10:22-36)

This feast occurs at the time of Jesus' conception. It is nine months before the Feast of Tabernacles, which is when He was born. Therefore it is fitting to observe it along with Christmas. (Which actually does not correspond with His birth at all.)

It reminds us that God performs miracles and delivers us from our enemies. Just as God delivered the Jews from their enemies and performed a miracle by sustaining the oil for the temple.

It symbolizes that Jesus is the Light of the world and Christians are to be a reflection of his light to others - Just as the menorah in the window shines out to the world.

It is symbolizes that our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit and we should rededicate ourselves to God on a regular basis. Just as the Jews rededicated the temple years ago.

In the next few nights I will explain a bit more about this wonderful holiday: its history, its traditions, and its significance today.

wait a few mintues after she falls asleep to make sure it is a deep sleep
put her down and attempt to clean
notice baby is NOT asleep but ignore because she is happy
notice she is fussy but found her thumb (pray she falls asleep)
5 mintues later, pick up crying baby that I just nursed but apparently is not happy

Homeschool

I have decided that I need to address the issue of homeschooling in addition to the issues of Attacnment Parenting and Gentle Discipline. To begin I am just re-posting the article of another, but in the future I will put my own ideas down.

Dispelling The Myths About Homeschooling
By Christine Webb

Myth: Homeschooled children are lacking in opportunities for social interaction.

Reality: In the homeschool community this question is usually met with looks of disbelief and a quiet chuckle. There are literally thousands of opportunities in Oregon for homeschooled children to get together for activities. Roller skating, theater groups, study groups, archery lessons, swimming, park days, recitals, ski outings --- the list goes on and on. And, although all families do not enjoy access to this wide variety, most do have the opportunity to play sports, to join community groups like scouts or 4-H and to participate in religious communities.

Children have the opportunity to develop friendships with children of widely varying ages. They learn social skills from their families, and, in a supportive community, from those who are more experienced at getting along in the world.

Myth: Homeschooled children lack "real world" experience.

Reality: Homeschooled children are quick to point out that they live very much in the "real world." Life is not "on hold" during the day for homeschooling families. These children learn at an early age how to succeed in the world at large because they participate in it with their families. They, for instance, shop, bank, and visit nursing homes.Older children volunteer in the community, hold part-time jobs, take classes, and participate in mentoring projects with adults.

This life experience adds up to well-rounded and capable young people who can successfully make the transition to living on their own or to moving on to college.

Myth: Homeschoolers all homeschool in the same way.

Reality: Just as in public and private schools, you will find a wide array of education philosophies in the homeschooling community. The real strength of homeschooling is that each family can choose and implement that which works best for its children and its situation. They are not limited to a "one-size-fits-all" curriculum, time frame, or education philosophy. Children can be given the gift of time to learn at a pace that meets individual needs and the resources to learn through their strengths.

The low child/parent ratio allows these children large amounts of individual attention, contributing to the homeschooling community's extremely high literacy rate.

Myth: Parents are not qualified to teach difficult subjects.

Reality: Although many students successfully opt to self-teach or to learn together with an interested parent, the options for children extend well beyond the family. Some families choose to get together to form study groups around a particular subject and to hire a tutor. Some students opt for community college classes. Others barter help with one subject for help in another. Classes over the Internet or the television are increasingly available options for many families, as are videos and computer software.

Learning options are excellent and varied so there is something to meet the needs of every family.

Myth: All homeschoolers belong to a single religious and political group.

Reality: People who believe this myth generally think that homeschoolers are "Christians with a conservative political agenda." In fact, homeschoolers come from all walks of religious and political life. For some, homeschooling is all about faith -- they feel compelled to do this from deeply held religious beliefs. For those homeschoolers, (a wide variety of Christian denominations, Jews, Bahais, Muslims, Buddhists, and a host of other religious preferences), homeschooling is an opportunity to more fully immerse their children in the spiritual life of their family and their religious community. But for many, religion is not a deciding factor in why they homeschool. It may be a matter of simply continuing a lifestyle that is family-centered. On the other hand, many seek out homeschooling after a negative experience with a public or private school. Increasingly, families are choosing homeschooling because they believe it is an excellent education option for their children.

The reasons for homeschooling are as varied as the families. For thousands of families, homeschooling is a lifestyle choice, an education choice or a health choice.

Myth: Parents homeschool in order to cover up neglect.

Reality: A parent who keeps a child home in order to abuse or neglect that child is not homeschooling and no homeschooling law could protect that child or apprehend an abusive parent. Parents who homeschool spend incredible amounts of time with their children. People who do not want their children around do not homeschool -- they send their children to school. It is easier and cheaper.

Education laws are not effective deterrents to abuse and should not be crafted for that purpose.

Myth: Homeschoolers do not support the public schools.

Reality: This is such a sad thought and so thoroughly untrue. Homeschooling parents, remember, are primarily the result of public school education. Most are college-educated. Their childrens' playmates most likely attend public school. Although a decision to homeschool is certainly a decision to keep the child out of the public/private school system, it is not necessarily a decision to withdraw support from the public school system. Homeschool parents own homes and pay taxes that provide financial support for the schools. Some even volunteer in the schools or provide daycare for school-age children.

A choice to homeschool is not a vote against public or private schools.

Myth: Homeschoolers without a GED or diploma have difficulty entering college.

Reality: Hundreds of colleges across the country are enrolling homeschoolers without either a GED or a diploma: state colleges, Ivy League colleges, private colleges and community colleges.

Colleges are interested in capable, motivated learners and responsible people. They find both in homeschooled students.
